In 2018, Michele’s life changed dramatically after undergoing back surgery. Complications from the procedure left her paralyzed from the waist down due to compressed nerves. Despite a second surgery to relieve the pressure, Michele faced a long road to recovery. She spent weeks in rehab and then a full year confined to a wheelchair while her nerves slowly regenerated.
During this challenging time, Michele never lost hope. She found inspiration from a fellow Y member, which motivated her to join the YMCA community. Michele embraced new forms of physical activity through the Y’s programs, beginning with water walking, aqua fitness, and chair yoga. These activities became vital parts of her recovery process.
With perseverance and the encouragement of her Y family, Michele has made remarkable progress. She has regained feeling and movement in her legs, transitioning from a wheelchair to a walker, and now confidently uses two canes when she’s out and about. Her physical therapist is optimistic about a full recovery, and Michele’s ultimate goal is to return to golfing—a passion she has held since childhood.
At the Y, we believe in the power of community and support. Michele’s journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative role the Y plays in helping individuals regain confidence, health, and hope. We are proud to walk alongside her every step of the way.
