My Y Story...

Dick

I have been a member of the YMCA throughout my whole life. In September 2005, I had open heart surgery to replace my aortic heart valve and repair an aortic aneurysm. After my cardiac rehab was completed, my wife and I decided it was best for me to continue through the YMCA. I felt safe at the Y, because I knew if anything happened there, the staff would help me. I started walking on the treadmill and lifting light weights. The personal trainers made sure I did not over exert myself so quickly after open heart surgery. They helped develop a workout program that fit my needs and made me feel comfortable. When I started walking the track, I was quite slow. Now, my daughters have to jog to keep up with me. This year, I started participating in yoga classes to work on my balance and stretching. Since my open heart surgery, I have had various medical issues including prostate cancer, diverticulitis, and a broken femur in my right leg. The YMCA is not only a place where I was able to physically heal, but also a place for me to meet new people and catch up with old acquaintances. At the Y, I realized I was not alone and am able to share my story openly and have others share their stories with me. I was told by my nurses on the heart floor that heart patients should receive twelve hugs a day to promote heart health. At the YMCA, I am always greeted with a hello and a hug. - Dick Rosin
