My Y Story...

Toni & Carter

We have been members of the Y since 2009, we joined when our first son Nolan was about eighteen months. Although we weren’t regulars, with both of us working, we came to the Y when we could and we used the drop-in child care. Our second son Carter arrived later that year. Then in the summer of 2012 our world came to halt when Carter received a diagnosis of Autism. We were devastated. What to do? Everything was so confusing and uncertain. Carter’s behavior was difficult. He was non-verbal and didn’t seem to understand or follow directions. I left my job at the end of the summer to concentrate on him. It was very isolating being at home full-time with a special needs child. I felt like a prisoner in my home and I became depressed. Then I remembered the Y and thought maybe Carter would be ok there. I was nervous that he would have a meltdown, but the staff were so patient that it put me at ease. It wasn’t always perfect, and Carter didn’t always behave, but I was confident in their care. We became regulars and that one hour a day pretty much saved my sanity and helped me be a better mother to Carter. I am so thankful for the help I received from the YMCA. ~Toni
