Banish Mom Guilt
Mom guilt is that nagging feeling that you should be doing something else. I should be spending more time with the kids. I should be tackling some household chores. I shouldn’t leave the kids; I just got home from work. Forget the should and should not’s, you need to exercise! You need to have a healthy body, mind and spirit to best care for your family. Yes your kids will notice, and that is great! You are being a positive role model and showing them that exercise is important.

YMCA Kids Korner & Kids Classes
So banishing mom guilt isn’t as easy as it sounds. Here are a couple of ideas to help. Bring your kids with you to the YMCA! Sign them up for a fun class to go to while you work out. Can’t find the right class, chances are your child will have a blast in Kids Korner, the YMCA’s child watch area, meeting new friends, playing, and maybe even making a project to take home.

Break the Rules
Many moms believe that they don’t have time to exercise because they think they need to find large chunks of time in their day to workout. Wrong! Sure it would be great to go for a 30 minute run or to a 60 minute class but when you can’t, fit it in however you can, break the rules. Take a short walk, run the stairs at work, do some crunches in your living room, see how long you can hold a plank. A minute here, a few minutes there can really add up!

Interval Timer App
So you want to break the rules and you’ve got 5 minutes. This is what you need to do. Go you the App Store on your smart phone and download a free interval timer like Gymboss. Intervals are periods of exercise followed by periods of rest, for example 30 seconds of jumping jacks/30 seconds of rest. Many interval timers come with popular intervals preset, if not set up your own. My favorite is the Tabata (20 seconds of work/10 seconds of rest for 8 rounds totaling 4 minutes). The timer will beep at the start and end of each round so all you need to do is pick an exercise and workout to the beep. No reps to count! Ideas for Tabata exercises or workouts can easily be found online.

Put it on the Calendar
Perhaps the easiest thing you can do to make sure you have time to exercise is put your workouts on your calendar just as you would for other meetings and appointments. The YMCA app lets you put classes on your calendar with the click of a button. Make sure you put your workouts on your calendar far enough in advance before your schedule fills up. I like to schedule my week out on Sunday nights.
