Whether you are looking for a great summer job or career as a professional lifeguard, the Green Bay YMCA Lifeguard program is the place to begin!
The class provides the necessary entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Participants must be 15 years old by the last date of class and must attend all class sessions to be eligible for certification. The course fee includes certification in Lifeguard training, First Aid, Professional level CPR, and AED.
At the first class, participants will be required to swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allow. Swim goggles may be used during the 300 yard swim. You must also complete the following within 1 minute and 40 seconds: swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to depth of 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a ten-pound object from the bottom of the pool, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Participants will also be required to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
Participants need to bring the following things to class: swimsuit, towel, lock and a sack lunch and drink and/or money for the vending machines.
In order to successfully complete this Lifeguard Training course, participants must pass a written test, complete all critical water skills and show maturity and responsibility at all times.
