At 423 pounds, I had just about given up on life. I was almost immobile and my sleep apnea was so severe it became a coin flip if I would even wake up in the morning. After three injuries due to sleep apnea, I met with my doctor to make a lifestyle change. We came up with a plan that was both sustainable and doable. At first, I concentrated on the nutrition portion because being 423 pounds, and injured, I could not start by exercising. After three months of changing my eating habits, I lost over 75 pounds! At this time I felt comfortable enough to start exercising. I was extremely timid and shy the first time I entered the Broadview YMCA. I didn’t know anybody and was very self-conscious of my body. The staff were welcoming and assured me this was a family-friendly, safe environment that promoted wellness for everyone. I decided to start with water aerobics for the low impact on my joints, plus I enjoy swimming. The instructor, Paul, was amazing in his approach to aquatic exercises and his class allowed every person to work at their own level and pace. After a few months, I approached Paul about weight lifting. He taught me a basic routine to follow on my own, and with the combination of weight training and water aerobics, I was able to accelerate my progress and move closer to my weight goal. Fast forward two years…I’ve lost over 225 pounds and lowered by body fat below 10% and counting! I have met so many great friends through the Y, and am eternally grateful for the caring staff and opportunities the Y offers to help people achieve their fitness goals. - Bill Janke
