Belonging Begins With Us: Embracing All Neighbors for a Stronger Community

At the Y, we believe that communities are stronger and more cohesive when people from all backgrounds feel welcomed and included. That’s why we’re proud to recognize Welcoming Week—a time to bring neighbors together, embrace our shared humanity, and honor the contributions of all who call our community home.

This year’s theme, Belonging Begins With Us, is more than a slogan—it’s a call to action. Across the country, YMCAs are sharing stories, building understanding, and encouraging dialogue that helps create stronger, more connected communities. In our community, we invite everyone to take part in the spirit of Welcoming Week—whether you’ve lived here your whole life or arrived just recently.

Why Welcoming Week Matters

Welcoming Week, organized in partnership with Welcoming America, reflects our ongoing commitment to bridge-building. By highlighting our shared values and celebrating cultural diversity, we strengthen the social fabric that binds us together. It’s about creating spaces—formal or informal—where every neighbor feels seen, valued, and connected.

When we take the time to learn about one another’s backgrounds, traditions, and dreams, we build the trust and empathy that are essential for a thriving, resilient community. Simple acts—like sharing a conversation, offering a smile, or lending a helping hand—can be the start of lasting relationships.

An Invitation to Connect

This year, we encourage you to reach out, share your story, and listen to the stories of those around you. Strike up a conversation with a neighbor you haven’t met yet. Support local businesses owned by newcomers to our community. Look for opportunities—big or small—to help others feel like they belong.

While you’re at the Y, we invite you to:

  • Fill out a Welcomer Sheet to share your name, where you’re from, and what belonging means to you.
  • Place a sticker on our World Map to show the places you and your family call home.

These simple activities create moments of connection and help us see the diverse, beautiful tapestry of experiences in our community.

How You Can Participate

  • Introduce yourself to a new neighbor.
  • Share a meal or coffee with someone from a different background.
  • Share your own connection stories on social media to inspire others.

Welcoming Week 2025 runs from September 12–21. Let’s make belonging more than a theme—it’s something we can live out every day of the year.
