From Discovery to Team: Green Bay YMCA’s Updated Program Tiers
The Greater Green Bay YMCA Introduces Four-Tier Program Model
The Greater Green Bay YMCA is excited to announce an updated four-tier program model that creates clear pathways for participants at every level. We’ve expanded our three-tier structure into four Program Registration Levels: Discovery, Foundations, Academy, and Team, to better serve our members’ and program participants’ needs.
This update introduces a brand-new Foundations tier, extending class sessions to help kids progress their skills over a longer period. The result is a balanced, flexible, and progressive program system that makes it easy for newcomers to try activities, and for seasoned participants to advance in their favorite discipline.
Each tier represents a step up in commitment, skill development, and program depth. Whether your child is trying a sport or class for the first time, building fundamentals, honing advanced techniques, or competing at the highest level, there’s a place in our Y programs for them.
We’ve listened to feedback from families and instructors, and designed these tiers to enhance the experience for everyone.
The Four Program Levels at a Glance
Our Program Registration Levels create a roadmap from casual exploration to competitive excellence.
Tier 1: Discovery – Explore & Try
Short 30–45 minute classes in a low-commitment, one-month format. Ideal for newcomers to sample different programs or those who want to try everything.
NEW! Tier 2: Foundations – Learn Fundamentals
You asked, we listened! Introducing weekly classes (30–45 minutes) running in two-month sessions, allowing more time for skill progression and confidence-building. Great for developing core skills in swimming, gymnastics, and youth sports. Just like Discovery, payments can be broken into monthly installments.
Tier 3: Academy – Advance & Commit
Longer classes (45–60 minutes) that meet once or twice a week. Offers higher commitment with progressive curricula, often including performances, clinics, or local competitions.
Tier 4: Team – Excel & Compete
Our highest level for dedicated athletes such as gymnastics or swim teams. Involves year-round training and competition in local, regional, or national meets. Entry may require tryouts or director approval, and YMCA membership is mandatory.
This tiered approach aligns with how many YMCAs structure programs for balanced growth. Our move to a monthly and bi-monthly model in 2024 boosted participation and has since been shared as a best practice with other YMCAs across the region.
Tier 1: Discovery – Try New Activities with Low Commitment
Discovery is our entry-level tier, perfect for those just starting out at the Y or exploring a new activity. Classes are 30–45 minutes long and meet once per week in one-month segments.
What to Expect
A fun, light introduction to the program with a rotating or repeating curriculum focused on fundamentals in a relaxed setting.
Flexible Scheduling
Monthly sessions make it easy to join or take a break based on your schedule.
Who It’s For
Anyone new to the YMCA or a specific program. Perfect for trying out activities like gymnastics or swimming with minimal commitment.
Discovery offers maximum flexibility and variety, lowering barriers to participation so more people can experience the Y and find activities they love.
Tier 2: Foundations – Build Skills with a Longer Progression (New!)
The new Foundations tier allows more time for skill development through two-month sessions.
What to Expect
Classes are typically 30–45 minutes long, meeting weekly for two months. Each class builds on the last, creating continuity and allowing instructors to introduce more advanced skills later in the session.
Progression and Confidence
The extended timeline helps kids develop stronger fundamentals and confidence. Parents also notice better relationships between instructors and classmates.
Ideal Programs
Perfect for progressive programs like swimming lessons, gymnastics, and youth sports, where skills build naturally from week to week.
Commitment Level
Two-month sessions strike a “sweet spot” for families—long enough for progress, short enough to remain flexible.
How It Enhances the Experience
By bridging the gap between one-month and long-term programs, Foundations offers a structured yet adaptable path for skill growth and enjoyment.
Example: A Discovery gymnastics class may repeat basic moves each week, while a Foundations class introduces new challenges in later weeks, allowing participants to progress toward intermediate skills.
Tier 3: Academy – Take Your Skills to the Next Level
Academy programs are for participants ready to deepen their skills and commitment.
What to Expect
Progressive, skill-based curricula often divided into levels or milestones. Over multiple sessions, participants advance through these levels.
Commitment and Frequency
Academy classes may meet once or twice a week or run for multi-month seasons aligned with school semesters.
Extras and Resources
Participants may access workshops, clinics, performances, or scrimmages. Some programs may require uniforms, costumes, or additional materials.
Who It’s For
Those who want to advance significantly and possibly prepare for competitive participation, like moving from Academy swim lessons to the Swim Team.
Tier 4: Team – Where Passion Meets Performance
Team is the pinnacle of our program pathway. It’s designed for participants who have mastered advanced skills and want to compete or perform at the highest level.
What to Expect
Team members train several times per week under experienced coaches, often participating in rigorous, goal-oriented practices.
Competitive Opportunities
Teams compete locally, regionally, and nationally, representing the YMCA in official meets and exhibitions.
Commitment and Requirements
Team programs require consistent attendance, strong dedication, and YMCA membership. Tryouts or director approval are often required to join.
Beyond Skills – Personal Growth
Team participation builds discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Many athletes go on to mentor younger participants or volunteer in YMCA programs.
Team Spotlight
The Green Bay YMCA Gymnastics Team exemplifies this tier, training year-round and competing across Wisconsin. Most athletes advance from our Academy programs before joining the team. Similarly, the Swim Team blends competition with community involvement, with members often volunteering at Y events.
