How The Downtown Green Bay YMCA Shaped The Wirch Family

For Karen and John Wirch, the Greater Green Bay YMCA has been a constant source of growth, connection, and opportunity across every stage of life. Their story reflects what the Y strives to be for all who walk through our doors, a welcoming place to learn new skills, build confidence, form lasting relationships, and give back to the community.

Karen’s connection to the Y began in childhood. She spent her early years exploring a wide range of programs that helped her discover her interests and strengths. From swim lessons and gymnastics to archery and diving, each experience added to her confidence and sense of belonging. By eighth grade, she was competing on the Y’s diving team. As she grew older, Karen stepped into leadership roles of her own, teaching swim lessons and serving as a lifeguard.

John’s first experiences at the Y started at age 12. He came to watch basketball tournaments and quickly felt the spirit of community that defines the YMCA. It was a place where people encouraged each other, celebrated effort and teamwork, and formed connections that extended beyond the court.

Years later, Karen and John’s paths came together at the Downtown YMCA pool. What began as two separate stories rooted in the same community space became a shared life that continued to grow at the Y. As they raised their family, the YMCA remained an important part of their children’s lives, through swim lessons, basketball, gymnastics, and summers at Camp Wabansi. The Y supported their family not just through programs, but through the friendships, mentors, and positive experiences that help kids feel confident, capable, and connected.

John’s relationship with the Y also grew through service. Driven by gratitude and belief in the YMCA mission, he contributed his time and leadership in meaningful ways. He served on committees, took on the role of Board Chair, and helped guide the Downtown Y renovation. His commitment reflects the impact of community members who invest in the Y so it can continue meeting the evolving needs of families today and for generations to come.

For the Wirch family, the YMCA has been more than a place they visited. It has been a part of who they are and a steady presence through every chapter of their lives. Their story is a reminder that the Y is not only where we go to be active or learn a skill, it is where we find community, discover potential, and build a better future together.
