The Fridge at Ferguson Family YMCA: A Simple Way to Care for Our Community

At the Ferguson Family YMCA, a simple idea is making a big difference.

The Fridge at Ferguson Family YMCA is a place where people can take what they need and share what they can. It’s open to everyone. There are no forms to fill out and no questions asked. Just fresh food and a chance to care for one another.

This matters because food insecurity is real in our community. In Brown County, more than one in ten households do not always have enough food. At the same time, a lot of food is wasted every year. The Fridge helps close that gap in a simple and respectful way.

The idea started with moments our staff couldn’t ignore. Kids would stay near vending machines after programs, hoping for something to eat but not having money. One day, during a staff meal, a few kids were given food. They ate quickly, and it was clear they were very hungry.

That moment stuck with us. It led to a bigger question. What if anyone who needed food could come to the Y and find it right away?

Now they can.

The Fridge runs on people coming together. Volunteers help take care of it. Community members and local businesses help keep it stocked with fresh food. Items like fruits, vegetables, dairy, and ready-to-eat meals go quickly, so support is always needed.

Everyone who gives plays a part in making sure the food is safe, fresh, and ready for families. That shared care helps build trust and keeps the space welcoming for all.

This is what the YMCA is all about. We bring people together, remove barriers, and help everyone reach their full potential. The Fridge at Ferguson Family YMCA is one more way we live that out each day.

There are many ways to get involved. You can donate fresh food, give your time, or help spread the word. Financial support also helps keep the fridge clean, stocked, and ready for anyone who needs it.

The most important thing to know is this. The Fridge is for everyone. Whether you need help or want to help someone else, you belong here.

It’s a simple idea. People helping people. And together, we’re building a stronger, healthier community.
